The John Patete Trophy was first awarded in 1983, in honor of John Patete, a foundation member of the Masterton Marist Rugby Club. At the annual conference of the New Zealand Marist Rugby Football Federation in 1983, where John served in a secretarial capacity, tributes were paid to the recently deceased Mr. Patete for his outstanding contributions to Marist rugby.
John Patete had a particular interest in helping to organize the annual New Zealand Marist Colts tours from 1974 to 1982. As a tribute to his dedication and passion, the conference decided to present the John Patete Trophy.
To this day, 50 years after Mr. Patete helped organize the first Colts tour in 1974, the trophy continues to recognize the player who demonstrates the best overall commitment to the New Zealand Marist Colts touring party.
