It is with deep respect and heartfelt sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Bill McCaw — All Black #97, Marist man to the core, and a true legend of New Zealand rugby.
Born in Gore and proudly affiliated to Marist Invercargill, Bill’s contribution to rugby was as enduring as it was inspiring. A tenacious loose forward, he wore the black jersey with pride, playing five tests and 27 games for the All Blacks between 1951 and 1954, crossing the line for six tries. He was a cornerstone of the Southland side, taking the field 50 times and forever etching his name in history as part of the Southland team who famously defeated the British Lions 11-0 in 1950.
But Bill McCaw was more than just a great player. He was a man of humility, integrity, and unwavering dedication. After hanging up his boots, he poured his heart back into the game, coaching and serving as an administrator for his beloved Marist club in Invercargill. He also served on the Southland union’s management committee, giving tirelessly to the sport he loved and the community that shaped him.
As the oldest living All Black until his passing, Bill carried with him a legacy of strength, pride, and quiet leadership. He embodied the spirit of Marist and the values we hold dear — faith, service, and brotherhood. His passing marks the end of a remarkable era, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him and through every young player who laces up their boots with the same passion Bill had.
To the McCaw whānau, we extend our deepest sympathies. Thank you for sharing Bill with the world. His legacy is woven into the fabric of New Zealand rugby, and especially within our NZ Marist community. Moe mai rā e te rangatira. Rest easy, Bill — your work is done, but your mana lives on.
