NZ Marist Colts Southern Region Tour - 2008 (22nd August to 31st August)

Each year there is a New Zealand Marist (NZM) Colts squad selected to tour. The team is made up of one player representative from each of the 28 clubs and invitation players from Marist clubs in Samoa, Fiji, Tonga and from the Brother's Clubs in Brisbane and Sydney.

This year the team tour begins in Wellington, travels across the Cook Strait for its second game against a Tasman Development team, down the West Coast for a match against a West Coast Development team and finally across the Southern Alps to meet the Christchurch Marist Colts.

The first selected Colts teams were for one-off games, however this eventually turned to internal tours usually organised within a different region of NZ each year. In 2005 the NZM Colts were invited to tour Queensland as part of the Brisbane Brothers Club Centenary celebrations. The most recognisable player from Brisbane Brothers would be John Eales -the former Wallabies Captain and old boy of the Marist High School in Brisbane.

The inaugural 1974 Colts team included one Gordon Tietjens at No. 8 with Gordon having a continuing link with NZM through 7's rugby and always prepared to assist with coaching sessions for various Marist teams (Club and national selected). This portrays how the links through the years continue within the Marist network of rugby players, coaches, administrators and supporters.

THE HISTORY OF FIRST NZ MARIST COLTS TEAM -1974

On 5th June 1974 all Clubs affiliated to the New Zealand Marist Rugby Federation were advised of the Federation’s intention to try to arrange games for selected NZ Marist seniors and colts teams, and clubs were asked to forward the names of players who would be available to play if suitable games could be arranged. From enquires made and discussions held with rugby administrators it became abundantly clear that because of commitments to Club Championships, Local Unions, the NZ Rugby Union, the Maori Rugby Union, etc. it would be exceedingly difficult to organize games for a NZ Marist senior team and that 1974 was definitely "out" as far as a senior team was concerned. However after protracted negotiations, arrangements were completed with the Wellington Rugby Union for a NZ Marist Colts team to play the Wellington second grade representatives during the weekend 28/29 September. All of the twenty-six Clubs affiliated to the Federation submitted nominations for the Colts team which was selected by Mr Mick J Horan (MSP Wellington), Mr Brickie T Mulcahy (Timaru Celtic) and Mr Terry Dunleavy (Auckland Marist) Convener of the selection panel.

In selecting the team the panel chose a team in which every club nominating a player was represented - so far as this was possible - and it was the panel's intention that all players take the field at some stage of the game. In all, some eighty nominations were received. The out of town players were billeted throughout the Wellington region. The team chosen by the selectors is as per list below and features many players who were very prominent in their local unions.

Assistant Manager: Brian Mulvey (MSP Wellington)

Match Organisers for NZ Marist Federation: Ray L Smith (Chairman), John H Patete (Secretary), and Members of the North Island Marist Board of Control

Result: The game was held at the Petone Recreation Ground against the Wellington second grade representative team who had won their previous three matches against Hawke's Bay, Wanganui and Manawatu. Of note in the Wellington team were two Marist players, Anthony (Tony) Meachen, MSP at No.8 and Tony Sellers, Hutt Valley Marist at first-five. The NZM Colts team won this match 11 - 6.

The following year a tour of Nelson, Blenheim and Wellington took place. The concept was continued each year with alternate tours of unions in the North and South Islands. Many NZM Colts have furthered their careers in NPC, Super 12 and New Zealand levels. These players include Gordon Teitjens, Dion Waller, Tony Coughlan, Marty Hollah, Ben Blair and Paddy O'Brien to name a few. Over the past few years, the team has included international players with representatives from Samoa (St Joseph's), Fiji (Marist), Tonga (Marist) and Australia (Brother's Clubs). The 30 year tradition of selecting a player from each of our Marist affiliated clubs ensures that players at a "grass roots"level are given an opportunity to tour with a representative team.

The main criteria are that players are Marist club members and have shown loyalty to their clubs. The opportunities for 15's games have not been so frequent and unavailability through national and provincial commitments have meant the teams have often had a very "Grassroots Rugby" feel with a combination of experienced rugby heads who have played many years of club rugby and up and coming young players who have been identified for their potential being given a chance to showcase their skills. While in later years there have been very few current All Blacks selected in NZM teams, the names of future All Blacks, NZ '7's, Maori, Colts, Super 14 and provincial players have been regular team members. An example of this was in 1998 when NZM XV played the Central Vikings, a joint Manawatu/Hawke’sBay team. While the list of All Blacks and notable provincial players, unable to play due to commitments, was large, included in the NZM team were Andrew Hore (age 19), Marty Holah (age18) and 18 year old Ben Blair. The Manawatu's 'Evening Standard' reporter Michael Lampp wrote: "Where the1998 Vikings had rolled past Wellington so impressively a week ago, Wednesday night they were forced to watch 18 year old Christchurch fullback Ben Blair, a New Zealand under-19 reserve, scrape a penalty just past the left upright in the last minute." These three players went on to become All Blacks within four years. For These players this game was a second chance as they had all missed out on their NPC squads that year.

In 2003 NZM played the New Zealand Defence Forces in Upper Hutt for a 38-27 win with notable NZ 7's Coach Gordon Tietjens coaching a very young NZM team that included a number of recent NZM Colts players. Eleven of the NZM players selected went on to secure NPC contracts within the next three years. NZM is unique in that it gives Club players an opportunity to play first class level and international rugby although they are not part of the academy, provincial and Super rugby. While the opportunity for 15's games have not been so frequent for NZM, and unavailability through national and provincial commitments have meant the teams have often had a very "Grassroots Rugby" feel with a combination of old rugby heads who have played many years of club rugby and up and coming young players who have been identified for their potential being given a chance to showcase their skills, the NZM Colts and NZM 7's regularly include the names of future All Blacks, NZ 7's, Maori, NZ Colts, Super 14 and provincial players in their sides. This shows the importance of the NZM Colts Tours.
