SPILLANE TOURNAMENT - 2008

Held at Liston Park, Auckland

The 77th Spillane Cup Tournament was held at Liston Park Auckland on the 8th and 9th March 2008. The tournament was held as a pre season two day competition with Auckland Marist hosting 7 other participating Marist clubs competing for the Spillane and Ham Cuming Cups.

The Brennan Cup competition featured North Harbour No. 2 Auckland Marist No. 2 and No. 3 joined by a composite team from Marist St Josephs (Samoa). Further games were arranged for U21 and U85kg grades. A netball tournament was arranged with 6 teams attending with highly competitive games being held at the Auckland Netball courts at Morrin Road in Glen Innes. The winner of this competition was Carmel Marist from North Harbour.

The Spillane Cup round featured teams from North Harbour Marist, Hutt Old Boys Marist, Old Boys Marist Napier and Hastings Rugby and Sports while teams from Marist St Pat's Wellington Hamilton Marist, Ardmore Marist and Auckland Marist competed in the Ham Cuming Cup. The winners were:- Spillane Cup: Hutt Old Boys Marist Ham Cuming Cup: Marist St Pat's Brennan Cup: Auckland Marist (2) Old Boys Marist Napier was relegated from the Spillane Cup round to compete in the Ham Cuming Cup round for 2009. Marist St Pat's won promotion to the Spillane Cup round for 2009. Because the games were held as a pre season tournament so early in the season the only grounds available for rugby were at Liston Park. This resulted in games commencing on Saturday at 11am with the final game being held under flood lights starting at 7.35pm. In an effort to embrace the Marist spirit it was decided to introduce a further lower grade to the tournament in the form of the U85kg grade which has been popular in the Auckland province. The Colts (U21) have for some years been competing at Spillane Cups and it was felt that the benefits of enjoying participating in a tournament such as this could have long term benefits for all the Marist clubs.

The results were as follows:-

The Spillane Cup team for 2008 was as follows:-

1. Jaco Holtzhusan, Hutt OB Marist
2. Lionel Wairau, Hamilton Marist
3. Ben Afeaki, North Harbour Marist
4. Sikeli Nabua, Ardmore Marist
5. Steven Bradshaw, Hutt OB Marist
6. Anthony Elisala, Auckland Marist
7. Frank Afeaki, North Harbour Marist
8. Peter Saili, Auckland Marist
9. Paddy Boyd, Hastings Rugby & Sports
10. Fa'atonu Fili, Marist St Pat's, Wellington.
11. Milo Lauana, Napier OB Marist
12. Andrew Turner, Hutt OB Marist
13. Tua Saseve, North Harbour Marist
14. Julian Tupai, Marist St Pat's Wellington
15. Vinnie McDonald, North Harbour Marist

This was the second year of the new format of a 1-day and 2-day competitions. Traditionally the Spillane tournament had been held over Easter weekend leaving plenty of time for rugby and social activities. The new program resulted in a two day intensive rugby competition with little time for social activities as teams had only the Saturday night for recovering before games the next day.

The liaison officers were responsible for regular communications with each club and the system proved to be a great success as teams were able to overcome any problems by direct contact. In an effort to lower the costs of clubs attending the 'traditional' registration fee for players was waived.

The Spillane tournament is unique and continued its special tradition of maintaining the Marist spirit and morale. All those participating, including Colts and U85Kg grades, enjoyed a strong rugby competition with friendships made and renewed. Thankfully the weather contributed greatly in making the weekend extremely enjoyable to all those who attended.

NZ MARIST SEVENS TOURNAMENT - 2008

Held at Wellington, February 2008

This year’s tournament saw MSP Wellington take out the top award in a very tense and hard fought final against Ardmore Marist after having met in pool play where the result had gone to Ardmore Marist.

The Plate was won by the Hong Kong national sevens side, beating South Island Marist 29 – 19.

The concluding International final that pits the winner of the NZ Marist tournament against the winner of the International division of the tournament saw the Hong Kong National team defeat a tiring MSP team by 34 – 12. The tournament was held in high regard by the Hong Kong team as the following two reports taken from RUGBY TALK, the official magazine of the Hong Kong Football Union shows.

Editorial excerpt: (Rugby Talk, Issue April 2008)

It is not often a team can go to New Zealand, – a country where they eat, live and breath rugby – and win a national tournament. But that’s exactly what Hong Kong did at the Marist Sevens in Wellington, using their skill, fitness and tenacity to overcome the challenge of physically bigger teams. It was a fantastic display of character by Rod McIntosh’s boys and bodes well for their chances in the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens 2008.

Wellington Boost

Coach Rod McIntosh hails his national squad brilliant comeback at the Marist Sevens that ends with a storming victory over the tournament Cup winners.

Coach Rod McIntosh was delighted at how his Hong Kong national squad responded to first-day setbacks to emerge as the top team at the Marist Sevens in Wellington. The SAR recovered from two narrow losses in the pool stages to carry off the Plate and then capped a brilliant second day by overwhelming Cup winners Marist St Pats in the “International final”.

“Part of the challenge of going to New Zealand was to put the guys in a different environment,” explained McIntosh

“That’s what we learnt from day one – it’s a new tournament, a new field, unknown opposition. They’re all things you have to adapt to in rugby and we didn’t adapt too well on day one.”

“We needed to turn it around. We were playing a lot of teams that were very big, very physical and very confrontational, whereas we tend to be a bit more lateral and use speed around the outside. So we needed to adjust to play these teams.”

“I was really proud of the guys because they responded. They really took on the challenge of these big teams and the physicality of the contest and in the end had three good wins to take the Plate and then knocked over Marist St Pats, who had won the tournament for the last six years.”

The annual tournament – which in the past has proved a stepping stone to the IRB Sevens for Kiwi stars such as Afeleke Pelenise, Nigel Hunt, Tafai Ioasa and Lote Raikabula – brings together the top Marist clubs in New Zealand plus other invited teams.

“It’s a high standard and there are quite a few players who have emerged from it to play for New Zealand,” said McIntosh.

“It’s a good tournament, which is why (New Zealand sevens coach) Gordon Tietjens uses it to spot talent.”

The SAR – playing as the Hong Kong Dragons – endured a tough beginning, losing 12 – 7 to (Whangarei Marist) Northland in their opening pool game. Then followed a frustrating 15 – 12 loss to North Harbour Marist, but ended the first day on a high with a morale –boosting 24 -14 win over North Island Marist.

“I laid down the law after day one in terms of why we were there, six weeks away from the biggest Sevens tournament there is,” revealed McIntosh. “If we’re talking like we want to play on the IRB Sevens circuit then we have to win these club tournaments – that’s a given. So we had to get a bit of belief, get a bit more physical and string a series of phases together, which the guys did.”

The tournament serves as a selection vehicle for the New Zealand Marist sevens squad, so the format sees the best Marist teams enter the Cup on day two while the remaining teams contest the Plate. “We were always going to be in the Plate, irrespective of our pool results,” said McIntosh. “The Marist clubs need to discover their champion team and also select their national Marist squad, so that’s why they enter the Cup competition, but at the same time they get exposure to overseas teams such as us. With that format I knew we were always going to be in the Plate competition, so the goal was to win the Plate and then have a crack at the Cup winners in the international final.”

Hong Kong played with renewed purpose on day two with debutant Tom McQueen to the fore. The teenager grabbed his first try of the tournament as the Dragons dispatched Greerton Marist 33 – 0 in the Plate quarter-finals. McQueen then claimed a double in a 31 – 14 win over Greymouth Marist in the semi-final, before he went one better in the final, notching a hat-trick as the Dragons defeated South Island Marist 29 – 19.

That set the stage for the show down with perennial champions Marist St Pats, by this time Hong Kong were on a roll. McQueen claimed another brace, as did Robertson, while Pannell and Varty also dotted down in a comprehensive 34 – 12success.

McIntosh was delighted with his entire squad and had special praise for former South Island School pupil McQueen. “His performance is a positive example of how well our development system with the national U18’s and U20’s works,” said the coach.

“Tom came back from a tournament (the Asian Junior Championships in Brunei) where his coach had rated him highly. I had two key guys who both had to withdraw from the New Zealand trip through injury, so I brought Tom in without having seen him play, simply on the reports of the other coaches. He stepped up. He scored eight tries on day two. He’s only 18 but he was our most physical player. He looks to have a promising future in the game.”

NZ MARIST SEVENS TOURNAMENT - 2007

The 12th annual NZ Marist Sevens Tournament was held in February at St Patrick's College, Wellington and was won, once again by MSP Wellington.

The final of the International Sevens section at the tournament saw Fiji Marist overcome the strong MSP team in a high quality and entertaining game.

NZ MARIST SEVENS SAMOA TOUR - 2007

Coach: Tony Meachen (MSP Wellington)
Manager: Marc Futter (Sponsor, Cadbury's)

Team
Chris Slade (MSP Wellington), Kaino Kaino (Ardmore Marist), Orisi Belau (Tukapa, New Plymouth), Alfred Pelenise (Marist Albion), Ioane Ioane (Hastings Rugby & Sports), Alan Monk (Marist Greymouth), Jonathon Manu (Hutt OBM), Nigel Hunt (NZ Marist), Augustine Leilua (Marist Albion), Ryan Setefano (MSP Wellington), Taupo Sefo (Marist St Joseph's College, Samoa).

NZ Marist were participating in their 12th annual International Sevens Tournament in Samoa this year. Over the years it has been a great experience for Marist rugby players and Gordon Tietjens (NZ Rugby Union Sevens Coach) has identified a number of quality Sevens players who have gone on to secure professional contracts after representing NZ on the International Sevens circuit.

Some key players who have emerged from the NZ Marist Sevens Tournament include a number of smaller rural clubs - Craig De Goldi (Greymouth Marist); Tafai Ioasa (Hastings Rugby & Sports); Chris Masoe (Wanganui Marist); Lote Raikabula (MSP Wellington); Johnny Leo'o and Tone Kopelani (Marist Albion) and more recently Victor Vito (MSP Wellington).

The 2007 results on the field were not as good as the third placing achieved in 2006 and was due in some part to the success achieved by the Samoan Sevens team's success at the International Sevens event in Wellington. NZ Marist were viewed as a top side and the team to beat by our Samoan opposition which placed added pressure on being able to perform and have our combination right from the very first game.

As always the school visits were well received by teachers, pupils and their families and they greatly appreciated the donation of balls and equipment presented on behalf of the 28 Marist Rugby Clubs in New Zealand.

Report

The first overseas tour by the NZ Marist Colts was an outstanding success both on and off the field. Four games in eight days tests the resolve of the players and injuries related to hard grounds and high temperatures take their toll. However the results were impressive and playing the last game on Ballymore as a curtain raiser to the Brothers Premier teams Club Semifinal was a real honor.

The hospitality shown by our hosts, the Brothers Club, and the many former NZ Marist expatriates was greatly appreciated - these included Kerry O'Donnell (Masterton, Nelson and MSP Marist Clubs), and the coaches of the Gold Coast XV Grant Batty (MSP) and Tom Rosewarne.

To the clubs that participated in this ground breaking Colts Tour, your players have done you a great service with their attitude to training, playing, touring, appearance, management and being a part of the "Marist Culture". This is something they will cherish throughout their rugby careers, playing and afterwards. Keep up the good work and strive to ensure that your future players have this unique opportunity.

Results: Winners of the Plate Final

The on field result was very pleasing with the last trophy we won being in 1998 with players of the caliber of Craig De Goldi. Having our first team training run a few days before the start of the tournament means there is a lot of emphasis on team bonding, coordination and settling for an initial team pattern very early. The focus the guys showed in attaining this was of immense value and showed in the final result.

An early loss nearly always places a team in the Plate section as was the case in the first pool game. From this point the team went on unbeaten.

During the lead up to the tournament and between trainings, the touring party visited the 1000 pupil Mulivai Marist Primary School and St Joseph’s College where the interaction between the our team and the pupils is a highlight. Having Cadbury’s Regional Manager (Marc) and a Sports Psychologist (Martin) as managers on tour also allowed us to run a session on “Key non-rugby elements” of rugby development for the team members. The players responded to this very positively and some of the key benefits included speaking skills, organization, confidence, career planning and values of Marist Rugby and the Marist Culture.

Jonathon Manu (Hutt OB Marist) Brendon Watt (MSP Wellington)

The catch cry for the tour was “Marist means Mana” and the entire touring group epitomised this throughout the tour both on and off the field. With most players new to playing rugby in the Island conditions and have a very short preparation time before taking on Samoan Club teams that have been together and playing sevens games continuously, it is important that the players, coach and managers quickly acclimatise to the situation. This means that there is very little free time until the tournament is over and requires total buy in and ownership by all.

It was a pleasing result despite losing in the Plate final as the effort, resolve and commitment shown was humbling. Off the field, the willingness to become involved in the School and community visits was a win for all.

While the results (1 Win : 3 Loss) were not a great success, the rewards of being involved in a team with a high caliber of young men who engendered a great camaraderie amongst the entire touring group was a highlight. This and the outstanding response from all the Marist club members in the areas visited shows that the Marist brotherhood in still very strong.
