The team was invited to the tournament at short notice with the withdrawal of North Otago. Tony Meachen needs to be congratulated for organizing the team and the majority of the logistics at short notice. Some unions played politics over the selection of preferred players. The ultimate squad comprised a mixture of players experienced in the "7's" game and some with little or no exposure to the alternative format.

The team assembled around 1pm on the Friday and a meeting was convened for the familiarisation exercise and an overview of the weekend's activities including the expectations of the coach and management. This meeting was productive and provided the platform for the close relationship that developed over the weekend amongst the team.

A training session with Gordon Teitjens was arranged, and proved invaluable for those players new to the format in terms of understanding the basic fundamentals of the game.

The team apparel arrived late on Friday however the extent of the kit was overwhelmingly appreciated by the players and solidified the unity growing within the team.

The first match on Saturday saw the team meet Bay of Plenty, who has consistently been one of the better teams at "7's". The lack of "7's" experience among the team was a telling factor and the game was lost quite convincingly.

The second game against Southland saw the team quickly learn from the experience of game one and transform into an organised and better strategic "7's" unit. The victory was close fought but well earned and provided the inspiration to succeed further.

Game three in the pool was a resounding and skillful victory over Mid Canterbury. The team qualified in the second place of post section play pitted them against Otago on Sunday morning. Fundamentally Otago had more all round skills however a three try to five loss was commendable.

The results of the weekend can be regarded as a great success. Craig Glendenning was an inspirational leader in terms of his strategic appreciation of the game and the way he imparted his knowledge in his fellow team mates. The transformation of the players who lacked "7's" experience was remarkable as they fed off the more experienced players and gleaned a better tactical appreciation by simply watching other games. Not only from the perspective of results but just as importantly placing the Marist name, its values and traditions on display in front of the hierarchy of NZ rugby administration, its players and supporters.

There were a large number of Marist players representing other teams at the tournament, many of whom visited the team tent. Our presence will have strengthened both the loyalty and respect those players hold for the Marist name. These players and the squad will also carry the benefit back to their respective clubs.

Report

The team assembled in Taupo on Saturday 4th September at Te Rangita Marae. What followed was an intense seven days where four games, two schools' visits, numerous trainings, physio sessions, meetings and bonding sessions culminated in good rugby results and a great Marist experience for players, management, our hosts (both Marist and non Marist) and all the schools and members of the communities we visited. Highlights included being able to fit in visits to Huka Falls, the geothermal areas, Aussie Ryan somehow winning the short straw for the bungy jump the tour party all chipped in for, Samoan Joe and Fijian Mike being recipients of the Jet boat ride.

Colin Meads and Andy Dalton (former All Blacks) mingled with the team after the last game before some old NZ Marist stalwarts (Sid Fraser-Jones and Brian Meachen) and the North Island NZ Marist delegates joined the touring party on the last evening for the dinner and awards ceremony.

Report

The tour started on 23rd March with all players and management meeting up at the Auckland Marist Clubrooms to get first introductions, touring kits and begin the creation of the team culture. The following day started after breakfast with a 9:30am training run at Sacred Heart College. Our thanks to the College, and in particular Margaret Twomey, Brother Giles, John Mahoney and Paul Molloy for their help and support. The touring team donated a NZ Marist playing jersey and rugby ball (which was used against their pre-season opponents Auckland Marist U19's that night) to their Sports Foundation. Later that day we departed for Fiji.

Following a light training at Albert Park in the morning and a more vigorous one hosted at the Marist College in Flagstaff, the team returned to the Marist College that evening to present gifts of gratitude to the College including coaching manuals, rugby balls and sports drinks donated by one of our sponsors, Hansells.

Friday 26th was the first day of the tournament with the first game of two starting at 2pm. The heavens opened up just before our game and we were destined to play in wet and humid conditions on both days of the tournament. We came through both pool games well with two wins and went into the final day with a further pool game to play first up which was well won. The next match against Waimanu was classed as an elimination game to see whether we would play in the Cup section or the Plate. We drew 5 all on the rule that Waimanu scored first so had to play in the Plate section. Waimanu went on to win the Cup while we faced LDS in the Plate Quarter Final. The intensity level of the teams stepped up and we won a tight game 12 -5 against LDS to move on to the semis against Nasuri. A tight game ensued where we failed to capitalize on a number of created opportunities and a missed conversion on fulltime.

A very friendly and rugby savvy crowd gave us a warm farewell from the tournament and invited our Manager, Tony Hargood to present the trophies at the end of the tournament. That night we were hosted by Marist Suva in their clubrooms followed by an official lunch the next day where speeches and presentations were followed by an afternoon of joking, singing, telling stories (or lies) with the Marist Suva players.

The following day was a period of relaxing, shopping and a trip up the coast to the Centra Hotel where we were invited to use their swimming pool, snorkeling equipment and canoes. On the way home we stopped at a local village and played their local team in a game of touch. By the time the village had heard of our arrival it was 15 verses 200. We secured victory in the last minute when Tony Hargood "split the defense and scored under a coconut tree". The game ended with the traditional Haka which the Village responded to by performing a traditional Fijian war dance.

Following a Captain's dinner (i.e. Cooked by our captain Jeff Karika) that night, we made our way to the airport for our midnight departure back to the Land of the Long White Cloud.

To our Fijian hosts, Fernado, Vilisoni, Sonny, Rafeal and Marist Suva we extend a big thank you and proving that the Marist rugby culture is alive and well both in NZ and in the pacific region.

NZ MARIST SEVENS TOURNAMENT - 1999

Held in Wellington, February 1999

This year's tournament had 18 teams entered and included Fiji Marist in their second attempt, who also brought a 25 member Marist supporters group to New Zealand for the tournament. They were rewarded when Fiji Marist took out the Cup by beating North Harbour Marist 42 - 14 in the final.

An extract from Fiji Marist's report after the Tournament:

"This year's tour of New Zealand also introduces a new concept to Fijian rugby sponsorship. In true tradition of undying Marist Spirit, players and officials airfares were sponsored by club officials, Marist Old Boys or business houses. A gesture that Marist is thankful for and will long cherish says President Rafele Kasibulu.

The side, captained by rover Meli Nayaca the only capped player in the side from the famed Fiji 7'steam of the Commonwealth Games, were soon taught some age old lessons of New Zealand rugby. 'Oi ran a kai valagi e kaukauwa na yagodra I cake'. The white man has strong upper body strength says Meli Nayacalevu. But the team has learned well from the counseling from the previous tournament. They were pumping irons as they prepared for this tournament and they matched their opposition in strength, and their speed and skills were unmatched.

The team was inspired by a twenty-five member Marist supporters group whose harmonious voices could be heard at the team talk and karaoke bars in Wellington."

Match Report

After a six year hiatus, players from 28 Marist Clubs eligible for nomination and selection for this invitation team to play its first ‘first class’ fixture. The match was lost 31 – 29. Locally the Central Vikings had first claim on Paul Schmidt-Uili, Dion Waller and Lee Waller (P N Marist), Reece Robinson (Napier O B Marist) and Jeff Karika (Hastings Rugby & Sports). NZ Marist had a kick at goal in injury time that missed by less than a meter. The game was keenly contested and the lead changed regularly. Although NZ Marist outscored the Central Vikings four tries to three, they suffered from a high penalty count against them.

The match was played in very wet conditions under lights and considering the single practice run, the performance was acknowledged by all parties as meritorious. The game was played in good spirits before a small crowd and in atrocious weather.

After match Awards:

A team meeting was held where the team decided a “Marist Man” trophy recipient. This was presented to the 18 year old Ben Blair who later went on to become an All Black.

Ben was then given the honor of presenting a plaque to each of the players in the team who had played in excess of 10 seasons for a Marist Club.

The four recipients were:

Bill Laing Dunedin RFC

John Akurangi Auckland Marist

Eamon Murphy Auckland Marist

Derek Rowse Palmerston North Marist

The Manawatu ‘Evening Standard’ Report by Peter Lampp, 2 July 1998

The Central Vikings scrapped past a scratch New Zealand Marist XV by 31-29 on the Oval last night.

Where the1998 Vikings had rolled past Wellington so impressively a week ago, Wednesday night they were forced to watch 18 year old Christchurch fullback Ben Blair, a New Zealand under-19 reserve, scrape a penalty just past the left upright.

That would’ve given NZ Marist an embarrassing victory over last year’s second division finalist. In the Vikings inner craniums, they’d probably posted 50 against Marist before the game started.

However, the tight five never gave them the go-forward and18 turnovers let the men from the Catholic clubs stay in touch. Just ask Marist (and North Otago) Coach Greg Shipton: “We had 21 players who came here to win. We wanted to get in the Vikings’ faces and knock them over. We also wanted to make statement that NZ Marist rugby should be catered for.”

It was a wet, miserable midwinter evening, but the Oval’s sand-silted surface coped magnificently.

The Vatican Army “clergy” from Wellington’s Marist St Pat’s club would have woken the dead with their deafening chants. The crowd was a mere few hundred but replied with a raucous chorus to give the game some ginger.

Viking’s coach Frank Oliver was proud of NZ Marist. He’s an old Invercargill and Palmerston North Marist stalwart and led NZ Marist against Manawatu years ago. When its first-class players were withdrawn, no one, least of all the Vikings, gave them a dog’s show.

It was a team of fringe first-class players including Auckland prop John Akurangi and locks Eamon Murphy and Milton Ngamu, Dunedin No.8 Matt O’Connell who went close to making the NZ Colts and one of New Zealand’s fastest wingers, Colin Sullivan of Wellington and Wairarapa-Bush.

Marist scored four tries to three. Sullivan bagged two, one from along Blair kick which the Vikings fumbled and the other gave Marist the lead with 10 minutes left. Vikings centre Paul Schmidt-Uili lost the ball and Sullivan was gone, whoosh.

The Vikings found a little zip, two rucks from a lineout for the winning try four minutes later, as if just doing enough. Like the All Blacks though, the tight five went as individuals, and so the backs never fired, but the Marist backs, after one practice, scored from a slick double-round. The Vikings’ lineout was faultless and the scrum shunted Marist in the first half and then went off. Manawatu prop Derek Rowse played the second half for Marist.

Vikings first-five Roger Chappell struggled, the wings saw little ball and fullback Jarod Cunningham could only run from broken play.

Oliver started Te Kawau and NZ Colts trialist flanker Brent Thompson at No.6 and he was one of the standouts, quick going forward and never shirking a tackle. Christen Davis came on at halftime at lock for Mark Atkinson.

Loose men Jeff Karika and Mutu Ngarimu, the sub for Te Kawau’s Andrew Harris after an hour, were the best of the rest.

Oliver agreed that mentally his players were not as tuned as they were for Wellington; the same self-motivation wasn’t there. “We got together at 4:30pmat the pub. What we’re doing is not ideal but we’re trying to make do with minimal disruption to club rugby. We’ll get meaningful trainings closer to the NPC. The Marist boys played with a lot of fizz for a team just biffed together.

Report

The team assembled at Marist St Pats Wellington. All members of the tour party received a gear bag and tour jacket via sponsorship received from Lifespan Smokefree. After a team briefing and training run it was aboard the bus to Palmerston North.

Accommodation for two nights in Palmerston North for the full squad was at a backpacker's hostel. The team bonding and spirit developed at this early stage was a positive element of the tour as the team quickly settled into a cohesive unit.

Team members were billeted at Wanganui (three nights), Masterton (two nights) and stayed the final two nights at the Airport Hotel, Wellington.

During the Official team dinner, also attended by the NZ Marist Executive, the John Pateete Memorial Trophy was awarded to a most deserving Tony Lysaght (Ashburton Celtic) for his overall contribution to the tour.

Overall the team performed creditably in all four games. Match results of two wins and two losses did not do justice to the big effort put in by the players and the team management. The tour itinerary with two night games, travel and many of the players having to play in all four games eventually took its toll. The Masterton match was a particularly hard game against an older and vastly more experienced opposition and it took the spark out of many of the touring squad. This showed at Wellington where in spite of a gallant effort over the last 20 minutes they were unable to come through with a victory at Athletic Park.

The full tour squad resplendent in their Lifespan Smokefree Tour jackets attended the Palmerston North Sports Mass at the Cathedral, an enjoyable service and obviously a new experience for many of our party.

Tour members also enjoyed a 9-hole golf match in Wanganui, a site tour and lunch at the DB Mangatainoka brewery as a break during the coach trip from Wanganui to Masterton and a short coaching clinic at St Pat's (town) College on the day before the Wellington match. Some local college rugby players also attended the coaching clinic.

Special thanks to all the host clubs and Marist members for the assistance in organizing the tour, provision of billets, liaison officers, medical assistants and the meals and hospitality received during our stay in each area. It was certainly freely given in true Marist style and much appreciated by all tour members.

NZ MARIST XV verses HAWKES BAY 1992

NZ Marist XV played the First Division Hawke’s Bay team at McLean Park Napier on 17th June 1992.  The Lane Penn (Selector/Coach and former All Black Selector) and Vance Stewart – Christchurch Marist (Selector/Assistant Coach) side was captained by Greg Coffey of Christchurch Marist.  NZ Marist led by 21 – 3 at the break and proved more than a handful for the home team with a final score of 41 – 20 including a personal tally of 21 points (3 conversions and 5 penalties) to captain Greg Coffey.  The Magpies had already had a five game warm-up for the season start with four wins and one loss.  Eric Kenny of Masterton Marist was the team’s Manager, Garth Thelin of Palmerston North Marist was the third selector and Eddie Wilson of Napier O B Marist was the match co-ordinator.

This was a top result for a one-off game considering the unavailability of a number of top Marist players.  Departing on the same day with the All Blacks tour of Australia and South Africa were Robin and Zinzan Brooke, Terry Wright, John Kirwan (all Auckland Marist), Matthew Cooper (Hamilton Marist) and Paul Henderson (Invercargill Marist).

The Team:
Brendan Grey (Counties Marist), Glen Stanton (North Harbour Marist), Alan Gardiner (Napier OB Marist), Jason Spanhake (Whakatane Marist), Angus Gardiner (Christchurch Marist), Richard Higgs (Palmerston North Marist), Shaun Bell (Hastings Celtic), Tala Kele (Christchurch Marist), Aaron Collins (Gisborne Marist), Dean Oswald (Whakatane Marist), Richard Kirke (Hamilton Marist), Mark Hammett (Christchurch Marist), Deryck Rouse (Palmerston North Marist), Murray Driver (Hamilton Marist), Steve Baker (Christchurch Marist), Mark Seymour (Whakatane Marist), Milton Haig (Greerton Marist), Greg Coffey (Christchurch Marist – Captain), Karl Williams (Palmerston North Marist – Vice Captain), Anthony Lawry (Christchurch Marist), Kelly Hansen (Christchurch Marist).
