FIRST NZ MARIST COLTS TEAM - 1974

On 5th June 1974 all Clubs affiliated to the New Zealand Marist Rugby Federation were advised of the Federation's intention to try to arrange games for selected NZ Marist seniors and colts teams, and clubs were asked to forward the names of players who would be available to play if suitable games could be arranged.

From enquires made and discussions held with rugby administrators it became abundantly clear that because of commitments to Club Championships, Local Unions, the NZ Rugby Union, the Maori Rugby Union, etc. it would be exceedingly difficult to organize games for a NZ Marist senior team and that 1974 was definitely "out" as far as a senior team was concerned.

However after protracted negotiations, arrangements were completed with the Wellington Rugby Union for a NZ Marist Colts team to play the Wellington second grade representatives during the weekend 28/29 September. All of the twenty-six Clubs affiliated to the Federation submitted nominations for the Colts team which was selected by Mr Mick J Horan (MSP Wellington), Mr Brickie T Mulcahy (Timaru Celtic) and Mr Terry Dunleavy (Auckland Marist) Convener of the selection panel.

In selecting the team the panel chose a team in which every club nominating a player was represented, so far as this was possible and it was the panel's intention that all players take the field at some stage of the game. In all some eighty nominations were received. The out of town players were billeted throughout the Wellington region.

The team chosen by the selectors is as per list below and features many players who were very prominent in their local unions.
