SPILLANE TOURNAMENT - 1955
Held at New Plymouth
Hamilton Marist's first Spillane Cup victory came in 1955 at New Plymouth. Hamilton had won the 1952 Brennan Cup section to win promotion to the Spillane Cup section. In 1955, Hamilton upset pre-tournament favourite, Auckland, 15 - 8, and then beat Gisborne 9 - 6 in the final. Auckland had a star-studded backline which included Keith Davis, Terry Lineen, Paul Little and Kevin Ngawati. The first three were to become All Blacks, while Ngawati was an Auckland and NZ Maori representative. Hamilton scored three tries to Merv O'Halloran, Mick Hourigan and Barry Cronin. Ken Gregan converted all three. Hamilton was down 3 - 6 at half-time in the final, but fought back strongly. O'Halloran scored a try and Gregan landed two penalty goals.
